AWL's Skip the Shelter Program

Our goal is to keep pets with the people who love them by preventing shelter surrender.  Shelter surrender should be the last resort for rehoming your pet. Why? All shelter environments are stressful for animals. No matter how well-maintained a shelter is, most animals must be housed in kennels and will hear, smell, and see many other animals at all times. AWL volunteers and POA staff provide loving care for them, but stress is unavoidable and can cause issues including anxiety, aggression, and illnesses.

In an effort to help families and individuals who need to rehome a pet, we have partnered with Adopt-a-Pet to offer low-cost rehome listings to members of our community for 90% off the listing fee (plus tax). This is where your pet goes from your home directly to the home of their new family without a stop at the shelter. On this site, you can fill out a profile about your pet and families looking to adopt can review it. Potential adopters will fill out an application, pay a small adoption fee to Adopt-A-Pet, and then a meeting will be coordinated. With over 3-million potential adopters using Adopt-a-Pet each month, community pets will find new homes faster, keeping them out of the shelter environment.
